Effect of vermicompost and some chemical fertilizers on yield and yield components of selective vegetable crops (Carrot and Potato)
Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of vermicompost and NPKS fertilizers on the growth and yield of carrots and potatoes in the Level Barind Tract of Bangladesh. The soil was low in organic matter and nutrients (N, P, K, S), with a pH of 5.4. Twelve treatments were applied in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments included different combinations of vermicompost (2.5,5,10 t/ha) and NPKS fertilizers, with doses of 80-40-100-18 kg/ha for carrots and 90-40-100-18 kg/ha for potatoes. The results showed that the application of vermicompost and NPKS significantly improved growth and yield. Treatment T10 (10 t/ha VC + 100% NPKS) produced the highest carrot yield (18.35 t/ha) and potato tuber yield (25.56 t/ha), followed by T7. The lowest yields were observed in the control (T1). Vermicompost (10 t/ha) outperformed 100% NPKS in promoting the highest growth and yield. Carrot yield correlated with plant height, while potato tuber yield correlated with tuber weight per hill.
