Abstract

The acaricidal and insecticidal effects of 12 selected botanicals against Varroa destructor and Apis mellifera were investigated. Crude ethanol leaf extract of botanicals was tested for acute toxicity using the full exposure method in a 16×4×3 Factorial Complete Randomized Design including negative control (water) and three commonly used chemical miticides (amitraz, tau-fluvalinate, and thymol). The results revealed four promising miticides whose efficacy of plant extract, as measured by LC50, was in the following order of potency: Ocimum basilicum (biday)(15.80)> Vitex negundo (lagundi) (23.79) > Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) (27.73) >Gliricidia sepium (28.83). Due to their high selectivity index, they are also considered less toxic to honey bees.
