Study on hard clam (Meretrix lyrata) seed nursing model in the coastal area of Tra Vinh province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Abstract

Commercial clam aquaculture in the coastal area of Tra Vinh province is significantly dependent on clam seed source. Annually, naturally breeding populations of hard clam occur on the tidal sand flats along the coast of Tra Vinh with different densities and often are exploited and brought to other places for nursery. In order to contribute to the efficient exploitation of natural resources, step by step take initiative in local clam seed sources, the model of clam seed nursing was studied. The model of clam seed nursery in the coastal area of Tra Vinh province was implemented during 9 months from June 2016 to February 2017 including 2 phases. Nursery in the coastal beach ridge was conducted in Phuong Nam Cooperative Group, Dong Hai Commune, Duyen Hai District, and the nursing stage on the tidal flat of Thanh Dat Cooperative, Hiep Thanh Commune, Duyen Hai Town. The clam seed source used in this model is the natural seed harvested in the coastal area of Tra Vinh province. Total 30 kg of clam grade I (150,000 ind. / kg) was released into the nursing pond. After 4 months, 220 kg of grade II clams (15,000 ind./kg) was obtained, reaching 73.3% survival rate. From October 2016, all 220 kg of clam seed is released on 5,000 m2 of clam fishery ground in Thanh Dat Cooperative. In February 2017, the result was 2.4 million clam individuals with the size of 600- 650 ind./kg reaching 72.7% survival rate. Establishing the model of natural hard clam seed nursery is to exploit effectively clam seed resources of the province, contribute to the sustainable development of clam fishery in Tra Vinh coastal areas.
