Response of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) to different levels of Ece and SAR
Abstract
Salinity is a wide spread environmental stress that reduces the agricultural productivity of arid and semi-aridareas of the world. A three years pot trial was performed to study the tolerance of pharmaceutical plant i.e. black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) towards combined effect of electrical conductivity (ECe) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR)at its germination, vegetative growth and yield. Seeds of black cumin were grown in pots with five treatmentshaving different levels ofECe(2.40, 6 and 8 dS/m) and SAR (12.80, 25 and35mmol/L) 1/2. All the recorded attributes like germination %, shoot height, shoot/root fresh and dry weight, number of leaves and branches, root length, number of capsule, number of seeds and1000 seeds weight significantly decreased by increasing level of ECe and SAR when compared with control. Higher levels of ECe and SAR as in T4 (ECe = 8 + SAR = 25)and T5 (ECe = 8 + SAR = 35) proved more hazardous forblack cumin plant. In conclusion, growth and yield of black cumin decreases with increasing levels of ECe and SAR.
